Updating Routes

Route changes happen. Whether you’re making a small amendment, adding a diversion or replacing an entire course, SummitGPX makes it easy to keep runners up to date.

When you upload a new version of a route, SummitGPX automatically updates the public route page while maintaining the same route link, QR code and embed code.

Why update a route?

Common reasons for updating a route include:

  • Land access changes
  • Weather related diversions
  • Safety improvements
  • Checkpoint adjustments
  • Last minute route amendments
  • Correcting issues in the original GPX file

Step 1

Open the route

Navigate to the event and select the route you want to update.

Step 2

Upload a new GPX file

Choose Update Route and select the revised GPX file from your computer.

SummitGPX will create a new route version and process the updated file.

Step 3

Add update notes

When updating a route, you can add notes explaining what has changed.

These notes help runners understand the reason for the update.

Examples:

  • Minor diversion added near mile 18.
  • Checkpoint 3 moved due to land access restrictions.
  • Updated GPX file following course inspection.

Step 4

Review the updated route

Once processing is complete, review the updated route page and confirm that:

  • The route map is correct.
  • Distance and elevation data look accurate.
  • Checkpoints are displayed correctly.
  • Update notes are visible.

What happens when a route is updated?

When a new version is uploaded:

  • The public route page displays the latest version.
  • Route statistics are recalculated.
  • Elevation profiles are regenerated.
  • Checkpoints are updated.
  • Existing QR codes continue to work.
  • Existing embeds continue to work.

This means you do not need to create new links, QR codes or embed codes every time the route changes.

Route Versions

Every route update creates a new version.

Previous versions are retained in the route history, allowing you to track changes over time and review earlier uploads if required.

Best Practice

Before publishing an updated route:

  • Review the route map carefully.
  • Check distance and elevation values.
  • Confirm checkpoints are in the correct locations.
  • Add clear update notes for runners.

Keeping runners informed helps reduce confusion and ensures everyone is using the latest route information.
