Understanding GPX

Waypoints explained

Turn meaningful GPX locations into useful checkpoint information.

Waypoints are named locations stored separately from the track. They can describe aid stations, water stops, summits or crew points. They do not determine the course line by themselves.

Initial GPX import

SummitGPX can import meaningful named waypoints as checkpoints. It skips generic navigation labels and large waypoint sets (more than 100 in the current importer). Review the resulting position, course distance, label and details before sharing; imported locations may need adjustment.

A replacement GPX updates the existing course and retains its checkpoints; it does not import new waypoint records from that file. Add or edit additional checkpoints through the route tools.

Prepare useful information

Use names such as “Lakeside aid station” and short labels such as C1. Add a recognisable Location and practical details for food, water, crew access and cut-offs. On courses that return to the same place, check each visit’s distance and order.

Export to devices

Supported route downloads can include selected points when checkpoint downloads and Show on GPS/watch are enabled. A point can stay visible on the map while being excluded from device files. The receiving device determines how it displays those points.
