SummitGPX Help Centre

Downloads and Exports

SummitGPX can provide route files for navigation, printable or spreadsheet checkpoint tables, and separate GPX sections for long courses. The buttons shown on a hosted route page or embed depend on the route, its checkpoints and split points, and the organiser's plan.

Where Downloads Appear

Download controls can appear on both the public view.php route page and the embed.php website embed. Both use the same current route and automatically serve the latest processed version.

Route File Formats

  • GPX is the standard route download and is available on all plans.
  • KML and TCX are available when advanced exports are included, normally on Starter, Pro and Enterprise accounts.
  • FIT is available when Garmin FIT exports are included, normally on Pro and Enterprise accounts.

KML is useful for mapping tools. TCX and FIT are course formats used by compatible watches and cycling or navigation devices. Device support varies, so runners should confirm the best format for their model.

Checkpoint-enabled GPS and Watch Downloads

When checkpoint-enabled downloads are switched on for a route, selected route points can be added to GPX, TCX and FIT files. These can appear as waypoints, course points or Up Ahead-style points on compatible devices.

Each checkpoint has a Show on GPS/watch switch and a device point type. Available device types include generic checkpoint, water, food, first aid, summit, danger, left turn and right turn. Map-only points remain visible on SummitGPX pages but are left out of device downloads.

The route-level checkpoint download control is the master switch for the main route downloads. If it is on, only checkpoints individually marked for GPS/watch export are included in GPX, TCX and FIT. Split section files always add section start/finish waypoints and place eligible selected checkpoints in their relevant sections.

Distance & Ascent Table PDF and CSV

When a route has checkpoints and checkpoint exports are included in the plan, runners and organisers can download a Distance & Ascent Table as PDF or CSV from the hosted route page and embed.

The table contains Start, each checkpoint occurrence and Finish, with:

  • Leg and cumulative distance.
  • Leg and cumulative ascent and descent.
  • Checkpoint name, type and notes.
  • Distance in kilometres or miles and elevation in metres or feet, matching the page selections.

The PDF uses the organiser's uploaded logo where white-label branding is available. The CSV is intended for spreadsheets, timing teams, race packs and further planning.

Repeated Checkpoints on Looping Routes

A label such as C2/C6 can represent the same physical checkpoint visited more than once. SummitGPX can create separate table rows for each occurrence by matching it to the route line, so leg and cumulative figures follow the order runners reach it.

Split Large GPX Routes

Pro and Enterprise routes can use split points to divide a long course into smaller GPX sections. This is helpful for long ultras, relay legs, support sections and devices that struggle with very large files.

  1. Open the route management page and expand Split GPX files.
  2. Select Add split point, then click the route or a checkpoint marker.
  3. Review the generated sections, their start and finish labels, and their distances.
  4. Download the split GPX ZIP from the hosted route page or embed.

Split points snap to the nearest route point. They do not edit the master route or delete checkpoints. The ZIP contains at least two section GPX files, and eligible checkpoints are included in the relevant sections.

Screenshot needed: expanded Split GPX files panel showing split points and generated sections, followed by the split GPX ZIP download button.

Versioned Download Filenames

On routes with version history, organisers can choose whether version information is visible. When enabled, public pages, embeds and download filenames show the current route version and update date, helping runners confirm they have the latest file.

After a Route Update

After editing, replacing or restoring a route, test the current public downloads. Re-check checkpoint positions, GPS/watch selections and split points because they must still match the latest route line.

Troubleshooting

PDF or CSV Is Not Shown

Confirm that the route has at least one checkpoint and the account includes checkpoint exports.

Split GPX Is Not Shown

Confirm that split downloads are included and at least one valid split point produces two or more sections.

A Checkpoint Is Missing on a Watch

Check the route-level checkpoint downloads setting and the checkpoint's Show on GPS/watch setting. Then create a fresh download. The final display still depends on the device and the format it supports.
